Papers and photographs, 1950-1990.

Assorted materials of Robert Allen Wells, a Madison, Wisconsin resident who served with the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserves during the Cold War on the USS Penobscot, USS Hopi, and USS Dale. Manuscripts contain service records consisting of various awards, assignments, and physical fitness accomplishments in the regular Navy and Naval Reserves, and miscellaneous official records regarding assignment, orders, and reserve activation and training. Also included are three boarding pamphlets for service on the USS Dale. Of particular interest are two armed forces loyalty oaths (1950, 1954) which list organizations that servicemen were not to have association. These loyalty oaths were part of Executive Order 9835, issued by President Truman in 1947 as an attempt to purge the government of communist and fascist supporters. Obvious subversive, communist, and fascist organizations, such as the Ku Klux Klan, Communist Party U.S.A, and the pro Nazi German American Bund, are included. Other organizations, such as the Southern Negro Youth League, were also included on the list because of their inclusion of communist party members in their ranks. Executive Order 9835 was a precursor to the Red Scare led by Senator Joseph McCarthy during the early years of the 1950s, and helped intensify the growing fear of Soviet influence on American politics. Photograph collection contains three images of the USS Dale, two of which are postcard size.
